Load Cells with Data Logging Software

Force Measurement Application Example – Destructive Test Rig  

ADM was recently approached by a provider of niche asset inspection equipment, who wanted to build a power pole destructive test rig. 

The rig was designed to break a range of different power pole types and sizes, and record what their maximum capacity is. 

This application required two draw wire potentiometers with a minimum measurement range of about 12 metres, and two with an 8 metre measuring range. These monitor the movement of the pole in relation to the rig as force is applied. 

The UniMeasure HX-PA series draw wire transducers were suggested because they could easily accommodate the required measurement ranges, and the ratiometric output voltage suited the datalogger inputs.

The HX-PA series transducers have been tested to withstand vibration of up to 15 G’s 0.1 ms max and shock up to 50 G’s 0.1 ms max, making them ideal for this rigorous application.  

It should also be noted that they are available as standard with an IP65 ingress protection rating, or IP68 is available on request. So, they can be used in a multitude of harsh environment applications. 

Two Curiotec CHTC series 30T high-capacity shackle hoist load cells were also proposed to monitor the force being applied to the pole through a hydraulic ram.

ADM was also able to supply a datalogger solution to capture both the load cell and potentiometer data for local display and export data this to a spreadsheet application. The data loggers sample rate had to be at least once per second, with a preference to be able to set that between 1 and 10 seconds.  

However, most of ADM’s PC based or hardware dataloggers can support much higher sample rates. 

This is a good example of how ADM Instrument Engineering can offer a complete force or weight & displacement monitoring solution.
